The Mike Adkins Profile

Mike Adkins is not just a regular eighteen year old guy. He lives in a house in Burke, Virginia with eight other people and five dogs, he has been diabetic for six years, throughout high school he worked as a DJ for dances, and now he is juggling friends, a girl friend, college life, and studying to become a Mechanical Engineer.

In his house he has three siblings, his mom and dad, his grandparents, and his aunt. Being the middle child he describes the role he plays in his family as the mediator and the “go-to” guy. “If something needs to be done, they go to me.” His siblings also look to him as a fun guy to hang with, whether they are older or younger. He also has a great relationship with his aunt Kathy, “We have had a very special relationship since he was a baby, and it has grown deeper and stronger as he has grown up and into his teen years - and even now. He is my nephew, like a son to me, and one of my best friends all in one.” (Kathy)

On a typical day, Mike listens to a lot of music, does a little bit of homework, and hangs out with friends. He also DJ’s at nighttime dances. The music that he mostly plays is hip-hop, but he likes to listen to just about all genres. His aunt describes him as “very intelligent, sensitive, caring, loyal, and affectionate. He also has a servant's heart. He is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand. In fact he helped so many people in high school, the administrators and teachers of the school wonder what they would do now that he graduated. He is also reliable and dependable. Though he can be shy at first at times, he has a great sense of humor and is the life of the party.” (Kathy)

He first decided and looked at Virginia Tech because his sister is going here. She looked at the school and fell in love with the atmosphere, as well as the sports (a.k.a football), and the same goes for him. He also likes the fact that the Engineering program is highly ranked and successful. When he graduates out of college and finds a career, he would like it to have a stable environment concerning money, and he also wants to be happy at the job he’s at. He likes Mechanical Engineering because he has the most fun doing it and nothing else sparks his interest. “His innate ability to know how things work and the ability to fix things when they are broken help him in school, especially engineering” (Kathy) He has a few good friends that go here too: Best Friend - Stephen, Girlfriend - Rachel, Middle school/High school friends - Bobby, Julia, and Drew.

What do you like to do for fun: Listen to music, boating, cruising in my car with friends and loud music

Hobbies: I love listening to music, going boating, playing and watching basketball, and watching football.

Which one of your dogs is your favorite pet? Molly. She is my Black lab/German shepherd mix. I found her on the streets in Queens, New York City.

What makes you happy?Listening to music and hanging with my best friends

What makes you sad?I’d say when I disappoint people or upset them in some way. I like to always make people happy. So when I don’t, it upsets me.

If you knew you could not fail, what would you do? I would be a professional DJ and give most of my pay check to the needy while only keeping what I needed to live.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be? Germany. I took German classes all through high school and never went there. I guess I would go to see what life over there would be like.

If you could travel either back in time, or the future, what time period would you go to? I would go forward in time to when I’m married, working my career, and I’m happy in life. I don’t know when that would be, but I would like to jump to that point.

If you could have a conversation with anyone in the entire world, at any point in time, who would it be? I would talk with my aunt because she and I always seem to click and agree on stuff in life. She has also been a big part of my life since I was born and still is, so I would just talk and chill with her.

What his aunt thinks about him:
· His favorites: Cars, Driving fast & Boating; why - Cars and boating he's always liked - driving fast has been in thepast few years - tickets to prove :)
· Basketball (favorite sport); why- he played when he was younger - still likes to play - and managed b-ball in High School
· Favorite cake --- yellow cake with white icing
· Favorite ice cream vanilla; why- this one was a little tough - cause he does like other Ben & Jerry's and stuff - but primarily I think it's vanilla - he always gets a vanilla frostyand shake
· When Mike was little he was so active that he was blamed for a lot ofmishap. As he grew up he became very responsible and was relied on a lot todo things and fix things.
· Favorite vacation spot: Smallwood, NYwhy - cause are whole family loves it there.
