-Lick-
The anti-smoking campaign advertisements presented by “Ydouthink” are always very “out there”. They always have weird things that happen and they are always things that you would never actually see happen. In this add this girl goes around and literally licks everything, including her cat, a plant, a trashcan lid, the ground, a grill, a swing set, etc. (basically everything she sees). She even licks this dirty gross fly swatter that was in the garbage. This ad is so gross and disgusting and I always shiver when I see it, while saying “ew” in my head.
The purpose of this argument to tell people different circumstances that would happen to you if you smoked. In this ad the girl licks all these gross dirty things and then it says at the end of the ad, “isn’t smoking just as disgusting?” This is meant to compare smoking with disease-licking. In my opinion I totally agree with this ad and I think smoking is disgusting and is stupid. I can’t stand smoke, I always cough when I’m around people who do it, and I don’t hang out with anyone who does. That’s good that none of my friends smoke then.
The audience is basically everyone. Anyone who watches the commercial would see it. It’s probably mostly for younger people that may try smoking out because of all sorts of reasons. This company wants to show anyone who does smoke, or anyone who is thinking about trying it that smoking is stupid and very bad for you. They don’t go and say that smoking will kill you or give you cancer or rot your teeth, but to get people’s attention, they want to show extremes so they have commercials like this.
This has a few different appeals to it. It uses pathos/ethical appeals by saying that it’s gross to smoke and gross to lick garbage cans. You could argue that there is a little logical appeal to it to, because you would morally and logically not lick the fly swatter or trash can lid, so why would you morally or logically smoke? You wouldn’t.
The company that makes these ads, the anti-smoking company YDOUTHINK? has made so many ads regarding smoking being stupid. I picked this one (Lick) because I think it’s one of the most extremes, and when I see other commercials, I never pay that much attention to it as to this one. It’s just gross. I know I keep saying it, but it really is. GROSS!
The claim in this argument is the fact that smoking is stupid and it’s comparing smoking to how bad licking trash and a cat is. They don’t mention any type of poll or numbers to make it a stronger argument, so logically this argument is not that strong at all. There isn’t much logic to this at all. How are they going to compare smoking with licking everything. They can’t. But somehow, I’m guessing by emotional appeal, it still is affective and it still works.
I think another thing that makes the argument work is the fact that the video starts really close to the girl’s face, and then kind of spreads out. That way the reader, or in this case, the person watching the commercial sees what she is actually doing. It also starts really slow and then eventually goes really fast. It’s a cool technique, and they definitely get their point across.
So what do you think of this ad? Have you ever seen this ad before? I’ve seen it a bunch of times, but I don’t know if it influences you guys in the same ways as it does me. Should I have talked about a different commercial they offer? Or do you think this one is a good one?

CURRENT ISSUE. STATUTORY RAPE

JUST BECAUSE SHE HAS THE BODY, DOESN’T MEAN SHE HAS THE BRAINS
WHEN YOU LOOK AT A YOUNG GIRL AS SOMETHING MORE, YOU NEED HELP
The purpose of this ad is to inform people about having sex with girls who may look older than 18, but are in fact not legal. The ad is going far with this picture, because by her face she looks like she’s ten, maybe, but then her body looks about 15 years older than that. On a regular basis, most people do not look like that. This is an extreme example of what a girl would look like.
The audience for this ad is most likely towards people who are over 18 and are doing this to girls. Statutory Rape is increasingly a concern of today’s economy and many people get away with it. Guys sometimes don’t even ask they just assume that the girl is legal.
There is some emotional appeal to this, just because any woman that sees this, and has had someone rape them, can sympathize with it, especially if the guy got away with it. There aren’t really any facts in this ad, so it doesn’t really have any logical appeal to it. It does have ethical appeal though. The ad is very powerful and the attitude of the writer wants to let everyone know how serious people get ages wrong and for wrong reasons. The writer makes this statement with an extreme view on the current issue.
The company Copyranter created this ad, but Laurie Toby Edison, a famous photographer blogs about it. http://www.laurietobyedison.com/discuss/?p=494
This ad was for a nonprofit company against statutory rape (as probably anyone could tell).
“The net result, of course, since a picture is and always has been worth a thousand words, is to sexualize these teenagers, and underscore their attractiveness and availability while claiming otherwise.
This, we believe, is a nonprofit organization and an ad agency that have been so seduced by the dark side of sexualization of young girls that they may not even realize they are sending a message opposite to the one they intend” (Edison).
All the people that have commented on the blog really hate the ad. I agree with them, it is very offensive and creepy. I think it could possibly hit people hard though, because it makes such a strong statement. Yea it’s horrible, but in reality it’s supposed to be horrible. The company is trying to make heads turn when people see it and hopefully realize how dangerous it is. It’s not about children getting recognized, it’s about how girls as young as maybe 14 go out and look a lot older and guys take advantage of that because they think they are legal but they actually are not.
The only main fact in this advertisement is the fact that if you are older than 18 and have sex with a person (in this case a young woman or girl) that is under that age, then you are committing a crime known as statutory rape.
This is a social statement for the most part. It is not historical or cultural. It doesn’t have to do with race, religion, or any type of ethnicity. The people that get the most out of this ad are people who have an opinion on this issue. If you are on the side of “this ad is really great and educates people about this issue” or on the opposite side saying, “this ad is horrible and shouldn’t be publicized” then this ad is for you. If you have feelings towards this ad, that is exactly what the company wanted to get. I don’t think they wanted bad feedback, but this issue is too important to not be publicized about.
So what do you think about the ad? Do you think this ad is too aggressive? Do you think it’s just right? What kinds of problems do you see this ad getting, if it hit a really well known newspaper or news anchor that a lot of people read/watch?

On the way to Myrtle...
This summer I went to the beach a few weeks after graduation. On the way down I had a traumatic experience. I feel like things like this just happen to me. Anyways, I started driving at three in the morning. I was so exhausted but so excited at the same time. My best friend decided to walk to the local Bloom just before we left so that we would have snacks for the trip. She thought it would be a good idea to get pepperoni and cheese sticks because she was really hungry. I don’t know why she would ever think that was a good idea but she said that’s what she was craving. She also picked up a half gallon of soy milk and 6 red bulls. I don’t drink red bull so when I saw that I got so pissed. Then we finally left, with me being in a bad mood.
Within the first 30 minutes we hit traffic and I do not know how. 3:25 in the morning, and there’s traffic?! These stupid 18-whellers felt like they needed to be on the road this early and get in my way. We sat on Fairfax County Parkway for a good 45 minutes before we finally got off, and we only had to go about 10 miles on the road. We finally got off and moved onto the next highway. This was my first trip on the highways driving by myself (meaning no adults were in the car), so I kind of got freaked out at first. Driving for long periods of time was something different too. And after all that crap I had to deal with, my air conditioning broke. It absolutely sucked and it was really hot in the middle of July. My friend decided to almost take off all her clothes but I yelled at her so she kept most of them on.
After this happens we finally think we’re on a roll and nothing else bad could happen. Well, that’s not true apparently. My G.P.S. decides to malfunction and break. It falls out of its holder and slides all over the place. My friend tries to put it back but it kept on falling! I was getting so aggravated because I was not giving all of my attention to the road and driving, but was focusing on this stupid machine. It even made me go off course and got us lost. Around the North Carolina and Virginia state border it said to turn on this weird road. Then it said we were on a random road somewhere in New York or something (it said I was driving on Rochester Avenue and I’m guessing that’s not in North Carolina). At one point the little car on the screen was in the middle of nowhere, “in la la land.” It wasn’t even on any type of road. I got so angry because I have no idea where I’m going. I’ve never been to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina before. I couldn’t just get right back on a random road and know exactly where I was going. Then I started to freak out, so my friend offered to take the wheel, so I was relieved and tried to find someplace to pull over. There was no where though. I seriously drove about 20 miles before I found some place worth getting out and switching.
She was nice and calm and started driving. As soon as she did, the road seemed to clear and everything went right for her. There was a nice breeze and it even got cloudy. I hated that. I just sat in the passenger side, pissed. She laughed and started pulling random food out of nowhere and eating it. I got jealous. Apparently earlier in the morning she also bought gold fish and Swedish fish and didn’t tell me. I stole the gold fish and blasted the music. That could almost change my mood and make me happy, and at the time it pretty much did. This entire story is a complete lie and I’m just trying to see if anyone picks up on it because I don’t know what to write about. We played and fell in love with the new Nickelback CD, Blackhorse, and some new Lil Wayne songs. “Fireman” and “Got Money” were two favorites. The band 303 was good to listen to too, but we barely did. I made this playlist right before we left and it seemed like we played the first seven songs over and over again. When I put my ipod on shuffle now I get so confused because I think this one song, like “Birthday Sex” will come after Pop Champagne” but really, all of a sudden some of the Lion King Soundtrack comes on. Sometimes I’m not expecting it, so I jump if the song has a loud noise at first and it freaks me out, like “I’m Not Your Boyfriend Baby.”
So, after she drove and everything was dandy for her, we stopped somewhere to eat breakfast. We were almost there, but she wanted to travel through Strawberry Town so we did. We stopped at this sketchy old house/restaurant and stayed there for awhile. I don’t know why she would ever want to stop there, because it was gross and creepy. We got out of there and finally got to where we were an hour away and finally I could see the light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. While she was driving she didn’t notice the gas tank though. It just about ran on empty because she didn’t notice. We barely made it to a gas station in time, but somehow with her luck we made it. If I was driving, we wouldn’t have. Anyways, we actually arrive in Myrtle around 10 in the morning on a Monday. I was so relieved and exhausted. I think as soon as we got to the house and got all of our stuff inside, I fell asleep.

What happened after the disaster
So after that horrible time in London, I finally went to Africa after those miserable two days. The rest of the trip was pretty great. I was exhausted though when we got there, because the past two days before that I had no sleep and was basically pissed the whole time. We also got there and it was about 10 in the morning, so my clock was all off. We got to this first hotel place, which was as much of a hotel as we were going to get. It was a really nice place. The rooms were tents, but almost houses. It had a floor and it had doors, unlike the other luxury tents. It also had this place where people sit and eat snacks and then watch wild animals come up and try and get your food. I just relaxed that day, and slept half of it.
There were all kinds of animals at this place. They were somewhat wild, or more like they weren’t in cages like at a zoo, but they were stuck in the same property so they have been used to seeing and interacting with people. It was nice for the first day. We were all pooped.
The next day we got up and got in our huge safari jeep and got ready to go. There are NO roads in Africa, so the two hour trips here and there from place to place throughout the trip was horrible. I was in the back, because I was the smallest person. The back made me almost throw up because of all the bumps. Ugh. I got so car sick. But anyways, the next place we went was a town. We got to rest a little bit, and have a nice lunch. Then afterwards we went on a safari.
The safari was amazing. We went to a place where it was a lot of different scenery. There was a part of the drive where we went up a mountain and it felt like we were traveling through a jungle. Then we also saw open areas where there were a bunch of animals. We saw giraffes, antelope, and cape buffalo. I was amazed at everything! My eyes were probably so big because of the sights. It’s really indescribable. This day I really thought I was going to see an elephant. But, I didn’t… so it was almost disappointing. O but that didn’t last very long.
The next place we went was in the middle of this huge park. Parks in Africa aren’t like the parks here. They are legit hundreds of acres of land where wild animals roam for the rest of their lives. This isn’t like the first place. I was literally scared. The place we stayed was an actual tent that could be ripped up by any animal that wanted to rip it up. We slept on beds, and had actual toilettes, but we had a zip-up tent door and a mosquito net over our beds. The first night we were there, I got so spooked because a warthog came by snorting really loud right by our tent. I peeked outside and saw these eyes looking at me. I almost screamed! I looked over around the back of the tent and I swear I saw about 20 eyes looking at me. I imagined they were harmless gazelles, but seeing anything like that looking at you in the complete dark was creepy.
The next day we went on a safari in the park. This place was so open, that in the morning we couldn’t get to our truck, because there was a herd of 12 elephants blogging our vehicle. They climbed up this steep hill and started charging at workers on this “campsite’s” property. Coming out of my tent around 8 A.M. and then seeing 300-2,000 pound elephants right in my face was not a great feeling. It was so cool though. I will never experience something like that again. Try waking up to elephants.
Finally, when we got out, we went into the rest of the park and saw so many animals. I think we saw close to 200 elephants and all these weird birds. My grandfather was really good at recognizing what kinds of birds they were, but I could have cared less. I think his favorite was this one called a lilac-crested roller. It was the funniest looking bird. Another funny looking creature was called a dik-dik. It honestly looks like a miniature deer that’s about two feet tall.
That day was the first day we saw lions. It was so cool. They were only about 20 feet away from our jeep, chilling in the “bush”. The “bush” is what the tall grass/bushes are called. Then, after seeing all those animals, we went to the middle of the park and ate a box lunch that they made for us. Eating with the animals was interesting. Baboons would come up to us and throw berries at us. They actually started attacking this one family. We parked right by them, but our driver warned us about these mongrels and told us to roll up our windows. This other family didn’t, and then went to the bathroom. When they got back, there were about five baboons running in and out of their truck. They happened to go into their stuff and grab their food out of their lunch boxes. They then started eating the food and chucking rocks. It was so hilarious; my mouth dropped in amazement.
After this day, we drove to another part of Tanzania and did a few different things. We went to an orphanage one day, and that was something special. These kids had nothing, and it was so sad. Their “toys” were flat soccer balls, and pieces of wood. Their idea for fun was chasing each other outside. The lady that was running the orphanage crammed 10 kids into three tiny bedrooms. It was so unsanitary and dirty, but that’s all she could afford. One child wasn’t even there because he had caught malaria and was dying. Another little girl had aids and was an orphan because of it. Her parents both died and she is expected to not have a great long life. Seeing people like that made me really take my life for granted. When I got back to the states, I appreciated everything a lot more. This wasn’t my whole trip, but this is a lot to read, and nobody likes reading these, so I’ll just stop writing! Haha.

My London Disaster
This past summer I had a once in a lifetime experience; I got the privilege to travel to Africa for ten days. My trip getting there was a hassle though. My grandparents were the ones that took me and they thought because of the length of the flight that we should stop in London for about a day and a half, so we ended up doing that. I thought the idea was nice because it would have been like a 16 hour flight, but instead it was about 7 ½ hours to England, and then another eight hours after that.
So I was all excited, getting packed and ready for this trip. I just came back from the beach and the next day I was on the plane. Everything was going perfect until we got off the plane in England. The first thing that went wrong was the fact that we couldn’t find the baggage claim. After the red eye we took, and it being 6 A.M. there, we were all really grumpy. We were walking in circles, and the London-Heathrow Airport was so confusing. We finally found where we were supposed to go about an hour later. Then we tried to figure out where we should go. Should we go to downtown London, or should we try and see if we could drop off our bags at the hotel. We finally figured that we would find the hotel. So we try and find the buses to the hotel. This takes another 45 minutes at least. We finally find the bus terminal and get on a bus. We look at our schedules and papers and the hotel’s name is Holiday Inn. Well, yet another issue. There is more than one Holiday Inn in London. We ended up getting off the bus and getting all of our stuff settled. My grandpa went up to check in, just to find out that it was the wrong hotel.
So we wait another 20 minutes after that to get on another bus. Then we find our hotel finally. We drop our stuff off and wait for a bus. It takes about 15 minutes of all of us sitting there before we decide we should call a cab, because we have to go back to the airport to get on a train to go visit downtown. So we get in the cab, and get to the airport. By this time I’m really grouchy and pissed. I got no sleep the night before, and I didn’t want to go through all this mess. Anyways, we finally got back to the airport and then we try and find the underground subway system/metro. And again, this place is the most confusing place ever. There are no signs anywhere, and the levels are all labeled wrong on the maps. We finally find this stupid train. The underground ticket area is so confusing too. We had to get the European money equivalent to dollars, which is pounds, and then try and get tickets out of the money we had.
Alright, now we’re on the train. I’m relaxed and a lot more excited now that we are actually getting to the downtown area. This train takes about 25 minutes to get there, but that’s ok because I was stoked to see the London I see in the movies. It took us 5 ½ hours to get from off the plane, to downtown London. Wow.
After we get there, we try and decide what to do. I say, “Let’s try and get on one of those double-decker tour buses. The ones in all the movies. The red ones.” So we paid for tickets for a bus and waited outside for one to arrive. A bus is supposed to arrive every 15 minutes. But of course with the luck we have had that day, it didn’t happen. 45 minutes later we go into the place where we bought the tickets and ask for a refund. As soon as that happens, the bus starts to come, so we quickly decide to get everything together and jump on the bus even though we had just waited forever. The bus driver was a real tool too. When we got on the bus, my grandpa asked the driver what had taken him so long to get here. His response was, “Well I don’t care how long you’ve waited. I take my time. I get paid by the hour.” He then went to the first attraction: the “Arch”, which was dedicated to all the horses who died in one of the big world wars. He circled around it four times, and then parked it. Everyone was so confused. We then hear over the speakers: EVERYONE MUST GET OFF THE BUS. THIS BUS IS DISABLED AS OF NOW. My mouth dropped. Seriously.
We get off that stupid bus and get on another one. This one decides to be nice and give us a tour for awhile. We went to four attractions with this one. Yet again, it decides to become “broken” or “disabled” and everyone must get off. At this point I just wanted to go back to the hotel and go to sleep. We had to sit on this stupid bus ride for the next three hours; the buses only go one way. I ended up falling asleep on the bottom of the double-decker for about an hour. We finally get back to the stop we started off and got off. And again, we go down to the train station and get tickets, and get on a train. Everyone is dead at this point and we are all glad to be going back to the airport/then hotel. We sit down and wait.. and wait… and wait…
15 minutes goes by, and we are still waiting on the train. The conductor comes on the intercom and says, “I’m sorry, but everyone please exit the train. This train is no longer in service.” I busted out laughing and looked at my family members. Then they all started laughing as well. How did we seriously get stuck having the worst time in a new city. So we all get up, walk out of the train, and go on another one. As we are sitting there, waiting for this train to start, I look over and the other train that was “broken” is leaving. It just took off! My mouth dropped again, and everyone in my family was dying with laughter. My grandpa was crying he was laughing so hard.
How could I have such a bad day?! How does this happen?!?!?!?! There were points in the day where I wanted to just go home and forget about the trip, but I got through it. I guess I’ll tell you about the actual trip to Africa next blog post.
Will Ferrell
My absolute favorite actor in the entire world is WILL FERRELL! I love him. You have to have this comedic sense of humor to love his movies though. There are a lot of his movies with “guy” humor too, so you have to understand that. One of my all time favorite Will Ferrell movies is A Night at the Roxburry. It’s relatively old, but I love it. His co-star is really funny in that movie as well. I also love Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, and Elf. Anchorman is a new one for me, but the parts I’ve seen and remember I absolutely love.
Step Brother is one of the funniest movies. I quote it all the time, and it seems like every conversation I have with someone I can use a quote in the movie. There are times when scenes say “That’s what she said” moments, but there is also little kid moments about who can have this special concocted “fancy” sauce.
A Night at the Roxburry is my all time favorite because it is one of the oldest movies Will Ferrell is in, and no one really knows about it. There are a lot of phrases that I quote, but not nearly as many as Step Brothers. It’s also funny because the two main characters wear really awkward, tight outfits that do not fit them well. There’s this one scene where they are both walking on the beach in skimpy speedos and they are trying to pick up girls. The pick-up lines are the funniest I’ve ever heard. In one scene Will Ferrell tries to talk as if there is an ambulance there. He makes a really loud siren noise and then says, “It’s the ambulance, coming to get me. Cuz the sight of you stopped my heart.” There are also points in the movie where the two brothers are trying to get into a bunch of different clubs and uses different moves on each club. Every time the two are not allowed in, but they keep trying. They must stand in about 10 lines, just to get rejected again and again. They also do this really interesting and memorable head dance while listening to the song, “What is Love?” After this scene Will Ferrell’s co-star bangs his head and shatters the glass window on the passenger’s side. For all that have seen this movie, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
And of course, I have to quote all of the other Will Ferrell movies, like the popular Talladega Nights or even on some terms, I’m pretty sure I’ve quoted Blades of Glory (yet another one of his movies). Will Ferrell is one of those actors that people either love or hate. Well, there are also people that don’t watch movies and have no idea who he is. But those people don’t count. I love his sense of humor, and most of the time I quote phrases from his movies because I have a personality somewhat like his characters. No I’m not a middle-aged man pretending to be a kid, or is acting like one. I do come off as a not so girly girl though, making me have that sense of humor. It shows as I am pretty much a tom-boy. But I guess I can dress up at times too. But anyways, yea I love Will Ferrell and I get so excited when movies come out with him in it because most of the time they are hilarious and awesome. Comedies are my favorite type of movie, if you couldn’t tell.
